Fouriesburg, close to Clarens but away from the "madding crowd".
Pumula Guest Farm is situated 7km outside Fouriesburg. Pumula roughly means to rest and the more correct spelling is usually Phumula. Pumula Guest Farm was established about 16 years ago. It is now only a guest farm, the lands are let out. Crops vary between maize and soya beans.
Fouriesburg is in the Eastern Free State highlands and was declared the capital of the Free State for a short while during the Anglo Boer War. The region boasts fantastic sandstone scenery, various outdoor activities and Anglo Boer War history. Fouriesburg is situated south of Bethlehem. The Fouriesburg area is also an asparagus growing area. Asparagus are usually available from the end of August. During March, the Fouriesburg area can be described as one big carpet of Cosmos flowers. Sunflowers are also a favorite crop in summer, and the area is transformed into a mass of yellow happiness.
Fouriesburg is close to the border with Lesotho. The closest border post to Pumula Guest Farm is Caledonspoort. Lesotho is well known for the Highlands Water Project. The Katse Dam has been crucial in supplying water to some areas in South Africa during the (2015/2016) drought. Lesotho is also well known for the ski resort AfriSki. Pumula Guest Farm is a popular base in winter for guests going snow skiing at Afriski. Recently (2016) the media made travelling in Lesotho worse than it is. Fouriesburg is close to Clarens, approximately a 20 minute drive. Clarens is known for art shops, lots of restaurants and organized activities. Clarens has also become famous for the Clarens Beer Festival towards the end of February every year. Fouriesburg even has a shuttle service to the festival.
Fouriesburg is a 40 minute drive from Ficksburg. Ficksburg is famous for the Cherry Festival in November every year. The Cherry Festival is a popular event especially tours of cherry farms, where people can pick their own cherries.
